Gouves, close by, also enjoy's great access to the north coast's major transport route, enabling easy journeys to be made to places including the large resort towns of Hersonissos and Malia. Winter visitors from the UK to Crete traditionally travel by plane or ferry from Athens.

Gouves, now in itself a popular summer sun destination, has plenty of accommodation including large modern hotels and small family orientated self catering apartments plus leisure and shopping choices for the visitor with car-hire, sports and marina (mooring) facilities. Gouves lies just to the East of Heraklion on Crete's north coast and occupies a typical coastal spot than reaches inland to the hills and the small villages nearby. Its beaches and easy airport access have seen its development in recent years and the area is now a well serviced, fully fledged resort town. Gouves proper also encompasses the areas of Amnissos, Karteros, Gournes and Kokkini Hani plus numerus smaller villages.

Town Ceremonies: Gouves, as with all Crete towns and villages has its own traditions and ceremonies centred around the Orthodox Church calendar. Celebrations include Easter (Paschka), the Name Day for individual churches, Independence Day and others. Local public message boards (and telegrpah poles!) are the usual place to learn about local information in any Crete village and Gouves is no different when it comes to civic information and events.
